Common sense

Just got back from Orlando and a day of drinking around the world at Disney's Epcot. Where the bathrooms are now branded with "Hand washing tips provided by Brawny."

Feels like a no-brainer, but not as nice as the bathroom Charmin put in Times Square.

Which is sweeter?

My girlfriend managed to control herself when we saw
“number one on her list” Jake Gyllenhaal at Uchi on Saturday night,

but this great use of packaging at our table couldn’t compete for her attention.

Alma at Marketing Mommy wrote these and here's Scott Ginsberg’s post.

The apocalypse is scheduled for April 23-29

TV Turnoff Week is approaching and Adbusters is trying to raise money to air their "uncommercials" during the Glenn Beck show. Of course, the public airwaves haven’t belonged to the public in quite some time. CNN is the only network with the balls to approve the spots for air. (Or are they just the only ones smart enough to recognize the opportunity for publicity?)

Maybe you don’t lose much sleep over the consequences that media overload has on us. But you’d better be thinking about how it’s changing our industry.

Joseph Jaffe would probably say that telling people not to watch TV is a moot point these days. To keep up with the times, Adbusters suggests expanding the concept to gaming consoles and computers.
No internet for a week? Talk about the end of days.

Guest Ad Review

I asked the copyranter what he thought of this low/hi-brow pairing of alcohol boards I spotted in Dallas.

His response:
“The champagne ad seems to be toasting the beer ad moment. Like you make it back to your apt. after getting upside down drunk at a party, and grab the cheap champagne out of the fridge to toast the fact that you made it home alive, and to keep the buzz going/delay the hangover onset.”
Cheers! Thanks copyranter.

“Are headlines the buggy whips of advertising?”

Sally Hogshead’s first go at her weekly column in AdAge crystallized the thoughts I’ve had on this industry since I started job hunting.
Which is just a nice way of saying that the article gave me both “Hallelujah” and “Oh crap” moments.

Rock your portfolio’s world

David at ihaveanidea sent me Burn Back’s latest track “Squeeze My Whipple” but I still prefer their anthem “Make the Logo Bigger.”

Volkswagen Beetle outdoor

Snapped this on my way to Austin last weekend. I think it perfectly captures the essence of the brand.

Getting your brand on the guest list

The season premiere of Entourage used the old Wayne's World trick
of making fun of product placements to get away with using product placements.
Turtle solves his budget problem planning Vince's birthday with sponsorships by a barrage of brands. The highlights include a Happy Birthday banner signed off with the Victoria's Secret logo (which provides a nice excuse for lingerie clad models to party) and Turtle asking Vince to hold up a bottle of Sky Vodka as he blows out his candles. The gag works especially well in the hyper-Hollywood world that the show simultaneously celebrates and mocks.

It's gonna be another prosperous season for the boys and HBO.

New York bound

My beautiful girlfriend is finishing her PhD in child psychology and has a great opportunity at a community mental health agency in White Plains. Since I plan on spending the rest of my life with her, I’ll be moving as soon as I find a job.
I’m sorry to leave Cavalry Brand Development, but it’ll be cool to get back to NYC.
I’d appreciate any tips or leads.

The gift of gabber

Just signed up for AdGabber from the good folks at AdRants.
Feels like MySpace for ad geeks. Maybe it'll prevent me from developing a twitter habit.
